External vs Internal Control Sauna Heaters: What the Difference Means on Site

The control arrangement is usually the last thing specified and the first thing that causes trouble on site. It determines where the panel is mounted, whether adjustments happen inside the hot room, and how the heater is wired.
Internal Control
With an internal control heater, the controls sit on the heater itself, inside the sauna room.
What it suits. Small private saunas where the user is the only operator and does not mind stepping inside to set the temperature.
Advantages
The simplest wiring arrangement
No separate panel to position, mount or protect
Fewer components to fail
Considerations
Setting the temperature means entering a hot room
The controls are exposed to maximum heat and humidity
Not suitable where children, guests or staff need to be kept away from the heater
External Control
With an external control heater, the controls are on a separate panel mounted outside the sauna room, with a control cable running to the heater.
What it suits. Almost every commercial installation, and any home installation where the operator wants the unit set before entering.
Advantages
The sauna can be switched on and adjusted from outside, or from a reception desk in a commercial setting
The controls are protected from heat and humidity, which extends their service life
Safer where children or unsupervised users have access
Enables remote pre-heating
Considerations
Requires a control cable to be routed from the panel to the heater
The panel position must be planned before the walls are closed
The Control Cable Question
The control cable is the detail that most often gets overlooked. It must be routed from the panel position to the heater before the sauna is clad.
Two things to settle at the design stage:
Cable route and length. Where the panel is some distance from the heater — a reception desk, for example — confirm the standard cable length and whether a longer run is available.
Connection protection. The connection point sits in a wet, hot environment. Confirm the connectors are rated for it.
On our SAB series, the external control arrangement uses a dedicated controller connected to the heater, with a range of controller options available depending on whether the site needs a simple dial, a digital display, or app connectivity.
What the Panel Should Do
Whether external or internal, the panel determines what the operator can actually control.
Temperature setting. A fixed-output heater with a thermostat offers little flexibility. A heater with a proper set-point range — 50 °C to 110 °C on our SAB-90H — lets the same unit serve a gentle wellness session and a hot traditional sauna.
Timer range. Domestic panels that cap at 60 minutes cannot serve commercial scheduling. A range from 30 minutes up to 12 hours covers both private and commercial use, and enables pre-heating.
Clear status indication. The operator needs to see at a glance whether the heater is on, what temperature it is at, and whether the timer is running.

Matching the Panel to the Site

Hotel or resort	External panel, positioned for staff access and remote pre-heating
Gym or wellness club	External panel at reception or a control point, with scheduling
Rental or guest property	External panel, ideally with app control so the unit cannot be left running
Outdoor or cabin sauna	External panel protected from weather, or internal if the operator is always present

Can an internal control heater be converted to external control?
Not usually. The control arrangement is a property of the heater and its controller, so it is specified at the point of order.

How far can the control panel be from the heater?
It depends on the controller and the cable supplied. Confirm the standard length and the maximum run before the installation is designed.

Is an external panel safer?
It keeps users away from the heater when adjusting settings, which is safer where children, guests or unsupervised users have access.
